Frequently Asked Questions
Internships allow students to gain technical and professional experience related to their studies, putting their acquired knowledge into practice in a real-world context, breaking the cycle of lack of experience and unemployment. They also provide insight into the job market, facilitate networking with potential employers, boost self-esteem, and more.
Internships may be recognized for academic credit within the “Center’s Elective Courses” program, as university or academic activities, and in all undergraduate programs at UMH. For more information on this credit recognition, please visit: https://estudios.umh.es/procedimiento-para-solicitar-reconocimiento-de-creditos-optativos/
For degrees being phased out, recognition can also be granted through free choice credits or optional credits, as established by the study plan.
We have a pool of candidates to offer the required profile to companies seeking student interns. However, the quickest way to secure an internship is for the interested individual to negotiate it directly.
As a student or graduate, you can consult:
- The history of internships at UMH . Among other information, students can find collaborating organizations by academic year, the people who supervised the internships, student and supervisor satisfaction with the internships, etc.
- You can also consult all the collaborating entities that can host students for internships. You can find information by degree program at this link.
- Information on international internships . This link will take you to information on scholarships, programs, experiences, etc.
- UMH students can access current internship opportunities through a secure platform . To do so, they need their UMH ID and can submit their CV to the opportunity that interests them. They will then be contacted for an interview by the selected organization. To join the internship pool, registration is required via this link .
- UMH graduates can access current job offers through a secure online platform . To do so, they need their UMH ID and can submit their resume to the job offer that interests them, in order to be contacted for an interview by the selected organization.

- Internal internships within the UMH
1. Requirements for doing an internship
- Be enrolled in an official UMH degree (or in one of its own degrees of at least 200 hours duration) during the academic year in which the internship takes place.
- Not having exhausted the maximum of 900 hours of practical training during the academic year, which runs from October 1st to September 30th. These same requirements must also be met if the training is internal to a department, service, or administrative unit of the UMH. If the training is mandatory for your degree (courses, internships, practicum, Final Degree Project), it does not count towards the maximum of 900 hours per year. If you do not have access to the system, you can contact the Occupational Observatory to complete the necessary paperwork for this type of training.
- The tasks to be carried out in the internship must be related to the skills detailed in the curriculum of your degree.
2. How can I register for the internship program?
Official qualifications (degrees, master’s degrees and qualifications to be phased out):
- Go to this link: Data Registration
- If you have any problems, please send us an email indicating your full name, ID number and qualification to:
University-Specific Degrees: Please send an email to
3. How can I find internships if I don’t find any offers through the Occupational Observatory’s Internship Bank?
The Employment Observatory has an Internship Portal where companies post their job openings. If you’re interested in any of them, you can submit your resume to begin the selection process. Remember that you can only submit your resume to one job posting per day, and you can update and modify it through our website .
In addition, you can search for a company yourself. This option yields the best results and can make it easier to find an internship near your home, better combine the internship with your studies, or find one that better meets your professional expectations.
Internships provide a first contact with the working world and also offer benefits for companies, such as:
-
The internships do not have an employment relationship and do not involve Social Security costs for the company.
-
You can perform tasks or jobs that you otherwise could not do.
-
You can contribute new ideas that improve processes and competitiveness.
In many cases, it is a very effective selection process for the company, as it allows them to get to know future graduates in depth (many companies hire students for internships once they finish their studies).
You can use these arguments, among others, to convince companies or institutions of the benefits they can obtain by having you join as an intern.
Internships can be carried out in all types of entities: public administrations and institutions, private companies, NGOs, associations, foundations, sports clubs and public limited sports companies, self-employed individuals, etc.
If it concerns public institutions (hospitals, health centers, public schools, secondary schools, university departments and services, etc.), you must contact the head of service, director or professor, as appropriate, to obtain their approval and agree on the conditions (tasks, period, schedule and tutor of the organization).
You can consult the information template for the agreement and internship annex available at this link .
Furthermore, we offer a search engine for partner companies , which can make it easier for you to find a company where you can do your internship, with two search options:
- Companies by sector of activity (companies collaborating in a specific sector of activity).
- Companies by degree (partner companies that have already had students in internships from the selected degree)
In the Formalize internships link you will find the steps to complete both your internship annex and the collaboration agreement between UMH and the company if you do not already have one.
If the company prefers to request the collaboration agreement itself, it can do so by completing the form found at this link .
4. Can I do two internships at the same time? Can I send my resume to several job postings at once?
Yes, you can do two internships at the same time as long as you don’t exceed 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week and they are scheduled at compatible times. However, you can only do this if you secure the second internship yourself, as the online application system won’t allow you to register for a second offer from the Occupational Observatory. We want all students to have an internship, and it wouldn’t be fair for one student to monopolize multiple offers.
To formalize the documentation for your second internship, you must have submitted the documentation corresponding to the first internship to the Occupational Observatory, and contact us to give you access to the application again.
If you submitted your resume to any internship opportunities in our database, your status will be marked as “4.3. Interested” for that day. The application will not allow you to submit your resume to any further opportunities until the following day.
If you are interested in two or more job offers, it is advisable to prioritize the most attractive one, as you will not be able to resubmit your resume for another offer until the following day.
5. How long do the internships last?
There are no restrictions on dates. Internships can be completed in any month of the year (including holidays) and at any time (as agreed with the company). However, there is a limit on the number of hours: a maximum of 900 hours per academic year. Both the start and end dates, as well as the total number of hours, must be specified in the document attached to the agreement.
If, when the period specified in the annex ends, the company wants to extend it, a new annex will be made for the new period (provided that the number of hours developed in the internship plus those planned in the new annex does not exceed 900, nor does the period cover more than one academic year).
For any modification of the conditions that arises after the documents have been signed (except to extend the internship period) an addendum must be made reflecting the appropriate changes.
6. Does the entity have to provide any type of financial aid to the student or pay any amount for insurance and administrative expenses?
Financial aid is voluntary, but highly recommended to cover potential student expenses and to make the program more attractive. It’s a key factor in a student’s decision to choose one program over another.
As a guideline, the average financial aid for the internships processed is 300 euros for a half-day and double that for a full-day, but ultimately it is the student who decides whether to undertake unpaid or low-paid internships, given their voluntary nature and other possible interests that they may have that are not merely economic, it being in any case an agreement between the student and the company.
If your internship is paid, meaning you’re receiving a grant or scholarship, the company must withhold the corresponding amount for Personal Income Tax purposes. You can request a refund of the withheld amount from the Tax Agency the following year when you file your Personal Income Tax return. (If your company has any questions, they should consult their tax advisor.)
Internships in companies do not have any employment relationship, so the UMH subscribes to an accident insurance policy for all its students in internships, which has a cost for companies of 30.05 euros per month and student, which cannot be prorated by days, including indivisibly the administrative expenses and which allows, in case of accident, that assistance is covered.
The UMH assumes the cost of the insurance when the company or entity is a public administration or institution, entities subject to public law, associations, NGOs, foundations, sports clubs and sports corporations, all of them non-profit, in addition to students of mandatory internships (practicum, stays, PFC, etc.) and students of international internships.
Accident insurance : At the bottom of the internship annex you will find the policy number subscribed with MAPFRE, as well as the telephone number to call to report any incident that may occur.
7. Coverages included in the internship insurance
As stipulated in the agreement, the UMH will take out a Work Accident Insurance policy and a Civil Liability Insurance policy for the student intern to cover any contingency. In the event of any such incident, the Occupational Observatory must be notified so that it can inform the insurance company. If urgent assistance is required, the 24-hour helpline number is 902 136 524 and the policy number is 055-1880010495, issued in the name of the UMH.
To cover administrative and insurance costs, companies must pay €30.05 per month for each student intern, as a single advance payment, to the bank account indicated in the internship agreement. To obtain a payment receipt, companies must request it and send a copy of the receipt to: Universidad Miguel Hernández, Observatorio Ocupacional, Edificio La Galia, Avda de la Universidad s/n, 03202 Elche, Spain.
8. What to do if the internship conditions are not met?
-
If the deviation is agreed upon between the company and the student (change of tasks, change of tutor, shortening of the internship, etc.), an addendum modifying the conditions of the appendix must be drawn up. As with the appendices, three copies of the addendum must be printed and sent, signed by both the company and the student, to the Occupational Observatory.
-
If the deviation is not agreed upon between the company and the student, it is an unusual case. If any of the conditions agreed upon with the company are not being met (tasks, schedule, stipend, etc.) and the student disagrees, they should first speak with their academic advisor to inform them of the problem and propose a solution. For example, if the assigned tasks are not those initially specified, the best course of action is to suggest to the professional advisor the possibility of performing the agreed-upon tasks or even others that interest them more and in which they believe they could excel. In most cases, companies are happy to have proactive and resourceful students. However, if the problem persists, the student can propose to the company that they draw up an addendum to the internship agreement to complete the internship period.
9. Is the study grant compatible with receiving unemployment benefits?
Can I receive unemployment benefits while undertaking a paid internship at a company that has an agreement with my university? *
Answer:
An internship contract (University-Company Agreement) is compatible with receiving unemployment benefits or subsidies, as the remuneration is understood to be for attending this occupational training activity, provided it is not agreed upon as an exclusive dedication agreement and therefore does not imply the individual’s lack of availability for actively seeking employment.
In the case of unemployment subsidy recipients, the internship remuneration will be counted as individual income for the purpose of reaching the 75% limit of the SMI (Minimum Interprofessional Wage).
Internship contracts that involve registration with any of the Social Security schemes are not compatible with unemployment benefits, except in the case of part-time contracts, which are compatible, but with a reduction in the benefit amount proportional to the time worked.
Regulatory reference: Article 15.1 of Royal Decree 625/1985, of April 2, which implements the Unemployment Protection Act. Article 221.1 of the Consolidated Text of the General Social Security Act approved by Legislative Royal Decree 1/94, of June 20.

On the other hand, the High Court of Justice of Castilla-La Mancha , Social Chamber, Judgment 1668/2018 of Dec. 17, 2018, Rec. 1515/2017 , declares that the student who carries out paid training internships can continue to receive unemployment benefits.
- To add credits to the file for completing internships.
A few days before your internship ends, both you and your supervisor will receive an email with a link to complete the internship report. If you cannot find the email, or if you haven’t received it, you can access it through Universite using the ” QUESTIONNAIRES ” application.
Once you have answered, your academic tutor (professor) will be able to review your responses and evaluate the assignment (remember to ask them to do so if they don’t do it automatically). If the assignment is evaluated as “PASS,” they will be able to issue a certificate of completion. This certificate is issued electronically; you will receive an email with a link to download it. It will also be available on UNIVERSITE, in the “MY PROCEDURES” application under the “MY DOCUMENTS” option.
With the copy of the certificate of completion provided by your professor, you must go to your Campus Management Center ( CEGECA ) within the deadline specified in the academic calendar. You should check with them regarding submission deadlines.
Incorporation of credits in the case of:
- Bachelor’s Degrees. Voluntary internships may be recognized as elective credits up to the maximum number of electives allowed in your degree program, in accordance with the UMH Regulations for the Recognition and Transfer of Credits for Official Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees (PDF – 361Kb
) . Credit will be awarded at a rate of 25 hours per credit, with a minimum fraction of 0.5 credits.
- Degrees being phased out (Bachelor’s degrees, Associate’s degrees, Engineering degrees, and Technical Engineering degrees). For elective credits, 20 hours per credit will generally be recognized. For optional credits, the equivalency will depend on the specific requirements for each degree program as outlined in its curriculum. Certain degrees have different credit equivalencies; this table provides information for each case (this information is not binding, as recognition depends on the corresponding resolutions of the competent authorities). During your next enrollment, you will be able to choose whether the credits are included as elective or optional credits, as applicable.
11. Taxation of university student internships with job placement services . You can take a look at this section .
12. When can I access the Job Bank? If I am a graduate/student, can I access both job banks? I have finished my degree and paid for it. Can I do an internship?
If you have completed your studies, you can access the Job Bank the day after paying the degree issuance fees, provided you are registered with the Occupational Observatory. You will not be able to access the Job Bank if you have not completed this registration process. Remember that once you access the Job Bank, you will no longer be able to access the Internship Bank, unless you enroll in other UMH programs and meet the requirements for internships.
If you have completed one degree and enroll in another UMH program, you can access both job banks by changing your degree program when updating your curriculum in the Occupational Observatory. To view internship opportunities, you must select the degree you are currently studying, and to view job opportunities, you must select the degree you have completed. Finally, if you are currently undertaking an internship and wish to consult the Job Bank, contact the Occupational Observatory to be enabled, as the application will not grant you access.
If you have completed your degree and paid the diploma issuance fees, you can undertake an internship until the end of the academic year, that is, until September 30th. Contact the Occupational Observatory to complete the internship paperwork.
13. Internal Internships at the University
What are internal practices?
These are internships for students of the Miguel Hernández University that take place within the Services, Departments and Organic-Administrative Units of the University, for the development of tasks supporting research, administration, etc.
Who can do an in-house internship?
As with internships in external entities, the requirement is to be enrolled at the Miguel Hernández University.
When can they be done?
Throughout the academic year and through the Observatory’s website.
What restrictions apply?
They can be combined with other practices as long as they do not coincide in schedule and do not exceed 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week.
No more than 900 hours of internships per year can be carried out, just as in external internships.
Why are two tutors necessary?
As with external internships, the professional tutor’s role is to advise and guide the student during the internship. The academic tutor will certify the proper completion of the internship.
At the student’s request, the tutors may issue a certificate of the internship completed.
